For those in family law practice, it may be of interest to note that the government recently published new figures on looked after children in England for the year to the end of March 2015. These include adoption and care leavers as well as information about those children were away or who were missing from placement when this had not been authorised.

What the figures show is that there has been an increase in the number of looked after children over a period of seven years. There was a 1% increase in the year to the end of March 2015 with a total figure of 69,540 looked after children at that time. Of those 52,050 were being cared for as part of a foster placement.
