Year 3, week 14: almost…

Well, I stumbled in a little the worse for wear at around 2.30am last night and discovered that with only a few hours of voting left this blog was leading the American Bar Association’s competition for best legal blog by around 300 votes. Then I watched open-mouthed as one of the other blogs suddenly jumped about 1,800 votes in front of my eyes. Which would be impressive at any time, but was even more so for a Friday evening when you’d imagine most people had left the office. Well, there’s no competing with that kind of American democratic might and this blog ended up an honourable second. As for the site which managed to have so many votes added in such a short time, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s a very funny series of ‘The Office’-style mockumentaries on corporate legal life in the States. So sincere congratulations to the Living the Dream blog and thanks to the American Bar Association for organising the competition. I hope the fact that a Brit blog beat all the rest of their choices (out of an original 2,000 blogs) will perhaps lead them to shortlist a few more from this country next year. In the meantime, thank you so very much to everyone who voted and sent messages of support.

Will you be demanding a recount?

  2. Neil - December 4, 2008

Put my vote in, but am not too hopeful that you will get a fair count in the US.

  3. headless - December 4, 2008

Done – only 81 votes so far though.

Just voted! BabyB is currently third with 305 votes. Second has 334 votes. First has 912.

  6. Matthew - December 5, 2008

Huzzah! You’re leading the category, BabyB! 🙂

  7. Abigail - December 5, 2008

Thank you for the link. You have introduced me to Legal Juice, whose entries on Contempt are fantastic.
    Accused: “Fuck you, judge”.
Judge: Five months for contempt, consecutive. Do you have anything else to say?”
Accused got up to (can’t remember, it’s Friday afternoon, was it) eight consecutive Contempt sentences before he shut up.
    Thank you.
    I voted for Legal Juice.

For someone with your obvious talent for skulduggery rigging an on-line election should be child’s play!
Don’t worry,my vote is in, just in case you suffer an attack of ethics.

  9. Academic Barrister - December 6, 2008

356 votes and leading the ‘Quirky’ category. Well done Baby B. But you might need to get your mind control expert to work on the electorate as as whole

  10. Basil - December 6, 2008

Wow BabyB is now in the lead with 369 votes!

  11. BabyBarista - December 8, 2008

Thanks to everyone who has voted. Currently winning the “Quirky blogs” section though with US-style democracy you just never know what will happen. Maybe they’ll start arguing about “hanging chads” or perhaps one of the bloggers has a friend who is governor of Florida.

  12. Will - December 9, 2008

Great Site, but as for voting keep voting you never know there maybe another late surge from Florida.

  13. CJ - December 9, 2008

Vote no 511 is in! Good luck BabyB!

  14. Fla Esq - December 10, 2008

    512 from sunny FL.
Someone asked for a Florida surge?

  15. legal lexie - December 14, 2008

  16. Jay - December 15, 2008

Done my bit BabyB – go get em Tiger!!!

  17. solmac - December 16, 2008

Tried to vote for you honey, but the link led nowhere. Another Florida rig?

  18. Lloyd - December 19, 2008

The Yanks will never let you win BabyB as they do not lose and if it looks as if they will lose they change the rules. The were useless at cricket so invented Baseball and have a world series amongst themselves, they were useless at Rugby so they invented American Football and have a world series against themselves, and then their girls were useless at Netball so they came up with basket ball, well that was actually a Canadian actually but now their boys play boys netball and so it goes. I have voted for you but like voting for what is truly right it’s a wasted vote.

  19. Funmilayo - December 28, 2008

    Voted baby B.
    ‘m rooting for you.

  20. Funmilayo - December 28, 2008

    I like Legal Juice too.
But BB’s been around for longer. LJ’s posts are funny too but she’s not as tested as our own BB.

  22. solmac - January 3, 2009

Hey, at 10:51 pm on 2/1/09 you’re in the lead!!! Keeping my fingers (and other bits crossed) that you win.

  23. AmeriCAN not AmeriCAN'T - January 3, 2009

I voted for “Living the Dream”
    Hope you lose graciously.

  24. Andy - January 3, 2009

    Dear Baby B
Commiserations, I think your blog is fantastic and I certainly tried to vote for you around 2345 GMT. Every time I clicked on your vote box the page did its refresh thing, and came back with exactly the same number of votes as before – my vote wasn’t even being registered! All the while I noticed “Living The Dream” creeping up, which was incredibly frustrating.
I was really hoping previous comments by Lloyd were cynically misplaced but he was right on the money – the yanks were never going to let you win. Clearly still feeling they’ve got something to prove to the nation that gave them their law (and indeed language) in the first place. Bah.

  25. A HOPO - January 3, 2009

Actually if you had looked at the votes at 0:30 GMT this morning BB had won by over a hundred votes.
Of course being the USA they kept the polls open an extra 8 hours until of course it was the middle of the night here and the Brits stopped voting and the US carried on until the US site won! bless em!

  26. None - January 3, 2009

    Very well done, excellent showing!

  27. solmac - January 4, 2009

Re the comment about not being able to vote, I sneakily voted twice, but hey who’s going to notice that. Would have voted another few hundred times more if I could. Well done, BabyB anyway. Happy New Year!!

  28. S. Frim - January 5, 2009

Well Done Baby B. Happy New Year to you.

  29. Pepys Blog Fan - January 6, 2009

Congratulations. Your experience was apparently identical to that of ‘Pepys Diary’ in the ‘2007 Weblog Awards’; the vote total crept up over days, then leading slightly, but the final hour’s surge for the second ranked American site overwhelmed Pepys by several orders of magnitude …
