Day 149, week 31: Claire

Let me introduce you to my best friend from Bar School.  I’m not prepared to give her a nick-name.  Just wouldn’t feel right.  I’ll just omit to tell you her surname.  So.  It’s Claire.  There.  You’ve got the name now.  Claire, the one pupil I can trust to give me honest advice.  Hard-working, ambitious and bright enough, she’s got it all to be a great barrister.  Above all, though, she’s a laugh.  Always there with a positive word or wry comment.  And she’ll take on a big night out at the drop of a horse hair wig and still be holding up the bar telling a joke at the end of the evening when the best of them have fallen by the wayside.

But before you say it, don’t start thinking there’s anything going on there.  Because there isn’t.  We’re mates.  Drinking buddies.  Pals.  We tell each other who we like.  We report on our dates, the good and the bad.  There is no edge.

I assure you.

Hey BB…. does she like Rioja?
This should not, of course, be construed as an oblique improper suggestion. I am always interested in ensuring that younger members of the profession start drinking at an early stage in their careers.
It will, in any event, as you well know (one assumes) assist with Bar dinners and fending of the attentions of, shall we say, the more senior members of the Bar who are ‘working late’.
